The use of Alfa-PVP has become more common in Finland – a new laboratory package takes into account changes observed in substance use
The use of intoxicating drugs has grown steadily in Finland over the past decade. In recent years, the spread of synthetic drugs such as Alfa-PVP, also known as "peukku," has been a particular cause for concern. For this reason, Alfa-PVP has now been added to the new occupational health laboratory test package.
Wastewater studies reveal that the use of amphetamines and cocaine, for example, has multiplied between 2012 and 2024. It is also noteworthy that cocaine use has spread from southern Finland to northern areas, although levels remain lower than in the capital region. Ecstasy use, on the other hand, has remained relatively stable, but spikes have been observed in connection with major events.
– A similar trend can be seen in Terveystalo's data. Comparing the results for 2024 and 2025 alone, a clear change can be seen in the list of findings. Although the absolute number of positive samples for traditional drugs such as amphetamine and cannabis has remained fairly stable, their relative share of all findings has decreased. This indicates that the diversity of findings has increased and, in particular, the proportion of pharmaceuticals, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines, has grown, says Johanna Westerlund, Service Manager for Terveystalo's laboratory operations.
According to a recent wastewater study by THL, the use of Alfa-PVP has increased significantly in recent years, especially in the capital region and Tampere. The study shows that use is consistent, with steady amounts of residue throughout the week, indicating problematic and regular use of the substance. Alfa-PVP is a powerful stimulant, the use of which can manifest itself in unpredictable behavioral disorders and dangerous situations, including in the workplace.
– According to public reports, "peukku" is increasingly being used to replace traditional drugs. Based on numerous news reports on its use and increased seizures, it can be interpreted that its use has increased, especially among young adults, due to its affordability. Alfa-PVP has previously only been included in our comprehensive drug testing package. Based on the wishes of our corporate customers, Alfa-PVP has now been included in the new testing package so that its use can be detected more often in cases of suspected substance abuse, says Anita Riipinen, Chief Occupational Health Physician at Terveystalo.
The analysis of Alfa-PVP differs from the analysis methods used for many other drugs
It is important to note that, unlike the analysis of many other drugs, the analysis of Alfa-PVP requires more detailed laboratory testing, which slightly prolongs the response time for results.
– Alfa-PVP is an exceptional drug in that it cannot be detected by immunological screening; the result must always be verified. Without verification, there would be a high risk of false negative results. Although the results of the new test package take a little longer to obtain, they are reliably available within five working days, and in terms of legal certainty, this is more valuable than a quick response, says Westerlund.
Addressing suspected substance abuse in the workplace supports both the individual and the community
Employers should keep in mind that if they suspect an employee of substance abuse, they should respond calmly and appropriately. It is a good idea to ensure that the workplace substance abuse program is up to date and to provide regular training to ensure that supervisors are familiar with the content of the program and their role in addressing suspected substance abuse.
– It is important to have the courage to address the issue and discuss it openly with the employee. Intervention is important not only for the individual's well-being but also from the organization's perspective, as substance abuse increases sick leave, increases the risk of disability pensions and unemployment, and reduces productivity. A proactive and fair approach helps to maintain a safe and healthy working environment for everyone, advises Riipinen.
